In Poetic Earth, presented at MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Anna Maria Maiolino (Scalea, 1942) presents a selection of works produced between 1975 and 2025, with a clear emphasis on her sculptural practice. The exhibition marks her first solo show in a museum in Portugal and follows her participation in the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2024, where she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. This context functions as a starting point: Maiolino is now a key figure for understanding how Latin American art has shaped the international cultural landscape through practices that were not always central.
Su biografía atraviesa directamente la obra. Nacida en Italia, pasó su infancia en Venezuela, vivió en Argentina y Estados Unidos, y se estableció en Brasil en 1960. Ese recorrido se traduce en una práctica marcada por la migración y la adaptación, pero también por una atención constante a lo esencial. En Poetic Earth, esa relación se hace evidente en las grandes instalaciones de arcilla realizadas en sala, así como en series como Terra Modelada, donde acciones repetidas estructuran tanto la forma como el significado. A esto se suman dibujos, fotografías y Tempestade de Ideias, un conjunto de más de cien bocetos que funcionan como archivo de pensamiento y exploración formal y personal.
Her biography directly runs through the work. Born in Italy, she spent her childhood in Venezuela, lived in Argentina and the United States, and settled in Brazil in 1960. This trajectory translates into a practice shaped by migration and adaptation, but also by a sustained attention to what is essential. In Poetic Earth, this relationship becomes evident in the large-scale clay installations produced on site, as well as in series such as Terra Modelada, where repeated actions structure both form and meaning. These are accompanied by drawings, photographs, and Tempestade de Ideias, a group of more than one hundred sketches that function as an archive of thought and both formal and personal exploration.
Dentro de esta selección, la dimensión femenina aparece cercana a la experiencia del cuerpo, al trabajo manual y a los gestos cotidianos. En la obra de Maiolino, estos elementos no son secundarios; son el fundamento desde el cual se construye una práctica que ha logrado expandir los límites de lo escultórico.

La exposición, instalada en la Oval Gallery del MAAT, reúne piezas de distintas escalas, incluyendo algunas de las más grandes que ha producido, y permite ver cómo el material sigue transformándose durante el tiempo de exhibición. Esa condición abierta refuerza una idea central en su trabajo: la obra como objeto vivo y en constante reconfiguración. En ese sentido, Poetic Earth no solo revisa una trayectoria consolidada, sino que evidencia el alcance de una práctica que, desde lo íntimo y lo material, ha tenido un impacto en la manera en que se piensa y se produce arte hoy.
Installed in the Oval Gallery at MAAT, the exhibition brings together works of different scales, including some of the largest she has produced, and allows viewers to see how the material continues to transform over the course of the exhibition. This open condition reinforces a central idea in her work: the artwork as a living object in constant reconfiguration. In this sense, Poetic Earth not only revisits an established trajectory, but also reveals the reach of a practice that, from the intimate and the material, has shaped how art is thought and produced today.
