Questioned by a present that produces a sense of strangeness, Agustín Nicolás Rivero creates a material fiction—as subtle as it is heartbreaking—where visual traces of the catastrophic reach forms of beauty. There is a fundamental thought in his creative trajectory, and it is the conviction that “making” with matter is a surrender to time itself: drawing, felting, sewing, molding, weaving, knotting, carving—each is an act of yielding to time and, at the same time, penetrating it.

That introspection enables him to produce works that arouse material contradictions and expressive forces that articulate the confusing transformation we are going through as humanity, and that abstract idea that we are standing at the edge of an abyss, suffering the vertigo of uncertainty. Rivero, moreover, returns with his imagination to that (abstract?) place before the “origin” (nothingness?), and evokes it as a quest, intuits its complex forms, and senses a muffled scream. His works contain the silent violence of impotence: they are bodies in commotion.

The artist reveals his intimate experience with the act of weaving-unweaving / making-unmaking, and the insistence on returning to slowness and to the search for meaning. An obsessive question emerges about time as materiality and the attempt to contain it in installations where densified textile volumes are present, the ethereal character of thread floating in space, or decayed wood that announces ruin.

[How beautiful is that damned desire of artists to “make with time,” to feel with devotion that its complexity contains infinite aesthetic possibilities, precisely because artists detach time from the arrogant linearity imposed upon it.]
