Es Devlin is one of the most prolific and daring stage designers of our time. Her work began in theatre and has expanded to concert stages, fashion shows, and events such as the World Expo and the Olympic Games. The impact and scale of her projects have taken stage design to another level. She has a particular gift for creating complex, beautiful spaces that also surprise audiences. Coming across her first solo exhibition in Seoul was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up: a chance to experience the magic of her work through a show spanning more than thirty years of her practice.

3rd Poem: Come Home Again

3rd Poem: Come Home Again

The exhibition brought me to Futura Seoul, a space that celebrated its second anniversary in August. Located in the historic neighbourhood of Bukchon, it sits within an area that preserves the architectural tradition of hanok. As part of its artistic programme, Futura Seoul developed a series of exhibitions and events titled 100 Poems. Each invited artist reinterprets the space through their work to create a poem.

The third poem, Come Home Again, is by Es Devlin. For the first time, the exhibition brings together five of her works in one space: Infinite Library, Mirror Maze, Come Home Again, Screenshare, and Line of Light, alongside a participatory work titled Collective Portrait. Each piece has been adapted to Futura Seoul’s architecture, creating a connecting thread throughout the exhibition.

I’m not sure I exist…

This third poem weaves literary fragments throughout the exhibition. Devlin is an avid reader and frequently references different authors in her work. It was no surprise, then, to enter the first room, Infinite Library, and find shelves of books turned backwards. A sense of unreality immediately filled the space.

“I’m not sure I actually exist. I am all the authors I have read, all the people I have met, all the women I have loved; all the cities I have visited, all my ancestors.” These words by Borges, alongside those of other authors, welcome us. Devlin’s works play with our perception: the room darkens, and images and text are projected onto the books. What was once a stage becomes a screen; the function of both the objects and the space changes in an instant. The Borges quotation signals that we are entering another dimension. Devlin sets out to test the limits of the brain, disorienting it to allow the body to learn for itself.

Within minutes, the library’s stage-turned-screen unfolds to reveal a mirror maze. As if by magic, we are six years old again, about to enter a hall of mirrors for the first time. The interplay of light and reflections prevents us from making sense of the space: we are lost, and only our bodies can guide us. We wander through a space fragmented into a thousand pieces, disoriented by a reality that eludes our reason yet captivates our eyes.

At last, we find our way to the next installation. We emerge excited and full of anticipation. The third room houses Come Home Again, an extension of an earlier public project presented at Tate Modern. That piece consisted of drawings on paper depicting endangered animal species from London. For this exhibition, the artist added threatened species from Seoul. Two distinct environments come together to create an alternate reality.

The paper installation occupies a white room, with a choir audible in the background. It feels as though we are in a cathedral honouring animals as part of our surroundings and our home, the word at the heart of the title. The paper creates a distance between us and what is depicted: we recognise the species while remaining aware of the material that gives them form.

Paper is integral to Devlin’s work. Her recurring references to the material emphasise the importance of our relationship with it. In Screenshare, a vast screen brings together sketches and marks from some of her creative processes. The projection splits into sections, revealing small notepads filled with drawings of her ideas. Visitors are invited to take a drawing away with them.

Devlin sees her work as evolving through interaction with viewers. Her pieces are completed by the public and are designed to be altered. As she explains, 95% of her work no longer exists physically: it lives on only in the memory of those who experienced it. This is what activating the space is about: taking away a small piece of an experience, the trace of a process. Meanwhile, the wall is gradually dismantled as each visitor interacts with it.

The final work is Line of Light. The piece grew out of the artist’s memory of waking up, slightly disoriented, in a room and seeing a line of light coming through the window. It is an exercise in contemplation set in Futura Seoul’s rear garden. The mountain and garden are reflected in a shallow pool whose frame aligns perfectly with the space’s vast window.

Reality doubles, taking on an unfamiliar dimension that takes us a moment to grasp. The work changes with the natural light throughout the day, simultaneously shifting our perception of the architecture. It is both a mirage and a fragment of reality recreated through other means.

Devlin’s art is a vitamin that transforms perception and momentarily throws reality off-kilter. Her work may seem left to chance, but it is carefully calculated to astonish. She encourages us to experiment freely, opening a door and inviting us to alter her pieces, lose ourselves, and go with the flow. Devlin wants to remind us what makes us human. Somehow, we leave these spaces with an experience that may stay with us forever.
